Article re-featured on SQLServerCentral

Posted by sqlwiseguy on July 31, 2009

The second article I had published on SQLServerCentral, ANSI PADDING, Trailing Whitespace, and Variable Length Character Columns, was re-featured in the newsletter and on the home page today.

My favorite part of being published is the discussion that hopefully follows.  Even if there are some negative comments, I just consider that an extension of the learning environment.

JumpstartTV Featured Content

Posted by sqlwiseguy on May 8, 2009

My video, Creating a Performance Counter Log, is the featured video on JumpstartTV today.  This is a short one covering how to create a counter log using Perfmon.  This is a pre-requisite for another video I have done, Integrating Performance Monitors with SQL Server Profiler

A side note, I really enjoyed making the videos and I think the short (less then 5 minute) how-to videos are a great way to get some practical knowledge.

My article Introduction to Profiler has been published on SQLServerCentral today.  This is part of one of a series that I am working on and covers the basics of Profiler.  The rest of the series will build to more complex uses of Profiler.

Deploying Custom SSIS Components

Posted by sqlwiseguy on April 9, 2009

This post is really for me.  I have written 1 custom component for SSIS 2005 and wrote an article on it for SQLServerCentral that was recently re-published.  In the discussion someone asked for specific steps for installing and using it.  Well, since it has been about a year, I couldn’t remember all the specifics so I’m blogging the steps so I have place to go the next time I need it.  So on with the steps:

  1. Register the component in the GAC (Global Assembly Cache).  There are 2 ways to this:
    • Drag and drop the component into C:\Windows\Assembly
    • Use the GAC utility that that is part of the Visual Studio SDK and the Windows SDK.  Here is the syntax:
        gacutil.exe  /if Path\AssemblyName
    • Depending on which one you installed it will be located in one (or both) of these locations if you used the default install:
      • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Bin
      • C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0\Bin
  2. On your development machine put the component in one of the folders under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\DTS (default install location):
    • \Connections
    • \ForEachEnumerators
    • \LogProviders
    • \PipelineComponents
    • \Tasks

The component I created is a Pipeline Component so it belongs in the PiplelineComponents folder.  Once you have put it here you can add it to your toolbox by right-clicking on the toolbox, selecting “Choose Items”, select the SSIS Data Flow Items tab (in this case), and select the Error Details component.

This is really a summarization of this blog post by Matthew Roche that you can read for more details.

Introduction to DML Triggers published on SQLServerCentral

Posted by sqlwiseguy on October 14, 2008

My third article, Introduction to DML Triggers, was published on SQLServerCentral today. The article was born out of forum questions about triggers and the errors and/or bad practices I have seen in the posted triggers. The goal of the article is to help people understand how DML triggers work in SQL Server so they can avoid the common mistakes.

You can also follow any discussion of the article here.

Feedback on my first published article

Posted by sqlwiseguy on April 25, 2008

Well, Error Handling in SSIS was published this past Monday on SQLServerCentral.com and has been a fairly successful article with over 5000 reads in 5 days. All the feedback I received was positive which was surprising, but very satisfying. I was anticipating some either negative or constructive criticisms/suggestions and have not received any yet. There are also a couple of people who have implemented the solution! The best comment I received was that I should create an SSRS report to package with it. I have done some work on that and have a basic report created which I posted on the discussion thread.

Anyway, I was encouraged by the feedback and hope I can find another subject interesting enough to write an article on and maybe put together a presentation for user groups and a SqlSaturday.

Error Handling in SSIS published on SqlServerCentral.com

Posted by sqlwiseguy on April 21, 2008

I’m excited to report that my first-ever article has been published on SQLServerCentral.com. While I called it Error Handling in SSIS it would probably have been better titled, Logging Data Errors in an SSIS DataFlow Task, as that more accurately identifies the subject. Nonetheless, it is out there, and it was fun to write. Hopefully I’ll get some good feedback from the members at SSC so my writing will improve.
